According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 59.3 square miles and a population of 1,215, 96% white. The median income for a household in the town was $35,156. The per capita income for the town was $18,561.

The first settlers arrived around 1760 and the first grist mill was built between 1790 and 1800, which was replaced in 1879 by a new mill. As the country became quiet and prosperous in the beginning of the century the well watered hills and fine mill privileges drew men of energy and ingenuity and laid the foundation for a manufacturing town. In 1797, the first “tavern” or hotel was built.

The Town of Gilboa was formed in 1848 from regions taken from the Towns of Blenheim and Broome. The name “Gilboa” is from a location in Israel. A cotton mill in the community of Gilboa was a major contributor to the early economy of the town, but it was destroyed by a flood in 1869.

Near the Gilboa Marble Palace 37Acres, you will find the original Gilboa Bridge which was carried away by high water, replaced by a lattice one when the turnpike was built, that was also carried away resulting in the present iron structure.Upon the building of the road from Potter’s Hollow to Gilboa (1850), a new hotel and storehouse were built which was a successful business for many years.

In 1926, the Schoharie Creek was dammed to form the Schoharie Reservoir. The original settlement of Gilboa was razed and flooded as part of this project. A new settlement was established north of the reservoir. A larger, full-scale overhaul of the Gilboa Dam began in the summer of 2011, which will add significant mass to the dam, install floodgates, and include a large tunnel bypass allowing water to be released safely from the reservoir into Schoharie Creek.
