New Lebanon Jiminy Peak Shaker Built is in the Town of New Lebanon in the north of Columbia County, with the Town of Chatham to the west, Rensselaer County to the north, the Massachusetts to the east and the Town of Canaan to the south.
According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 36 square miles and a population of 2,454 people, 96% white. The median income for a household is $44,805 and the per capita income for the town is $20,529.

New Lebanon was formed from the town of Canaan in 1818 and was the main spiritual home of the Shakers. The Mount Lebanon Shaker Society had 609 members in 1864. Most historic structures now belong to the Shaker Museum and Library. Some of the other surviving buildings are home to the Darrow School. Still others have been converted into a Sufi retreat center called the Abode of the Message.

New Lebanon was a popular resort because of its natural springs. Its agricultural activities are now minimal and most residents work in Albany or Pittsfield, both within commuting distance. It is also a destination for second home owners, in part attracted by the proximity of the Jiminy Peak Ski Area.
