It is close to the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood. Austerlitz with its mountainous terrain features many luxury homes and hunting terrain. Austerlitz is a small, rural town north of Hillsdale, east of Chatham, South of Canaan and West of the Berkshires. Austerlitz NY Real Estate is in great demand.
Founded in the 1750’s, the town is rich in history – some early settlers and sons served in the Revolutionary War. The town was organized from parts of the towns of Hillsdale, Chatham, and Canaan, March 28, 1818. A little more than one-fifteenth of the present town was taken from Chatham, a little over one-eighth from Canaan, and a little less than five-sixths from Hillsdale. From the fact that among the first settlers there were no less than twelve families of Spencers, the north part of Hillsdale had been known from the first as “Spencer’s-town.” When the division of the town was being talked up it was proposed to call the new town “New Ulm.” When the bill erecting it passed the Legislature, however, Martin Van Buren, then a State Senator, and who, being an ardent admirer of the great Napoleon, leaped to his feet and moved to amend by calling the new town “Austerlitz.”

The streams of Austerlitz gave rise to industries such as farming, raising sheep, and mill operations. Saw mills, grist mills, mills for wool carding and the making of cider, shingles and planes enabled the settlers to make a living. Vestiges of old milk, early gravesites and historic buildings still remain.
According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 48.8 square miles and a population of 1,453 people. The median income for a household in the town was $51,369. The per capita income for the town was $38,054.
The town was organized from parts of the towns of Hillsdale, Chatham, and Canaan on March 28, 1878. Edna St. Vincent Millay, poet, lived at Steepletop, on a more than 800-acre property that had previously been a farm and is currently a tourist attraction. A large proportion of its residents are second home owners who enjoy its rural character, scenic vistas and abundant wildlife. Its easy access to the Berkshires and Tanglewood add to its appeal.
Two programs, the Blueberry Festival and Autumn in Austerlitz, grow in popularity each year. Blueberries, prolific on Harvey Mountain, figured prominently in the life of earlier settlers, since sale of blueberries helped them pay their taxes. Summer now brings demonstrations of early crafts, blueberry sweets, a puppeteer, hand-made products and music – all at the Blueberry Festival.
