Ashland NY real estate includes, the hamlet of Ashland, Batavia Creek, Four Corners, North Settlement and West Settlement.   Many skiers from Windham own property in Ashland.   Ashland hamlet is in the south part of the town on Route 23.   It is located at the edge of the Catskill Park and at the south town line.

Ashland is a town in the northern part of Greene County, bordered on the north by Schoharie County to the east by the Town of Windham to the south by the Towns of Lexington and Jewett and to the west by the Town of Prattsville.

According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 26 sq mi square miles and a population of 752, 97% white.   The median income for a household in the town was $35,357.   The per capita income for the town was $18,029.

Early settlements were abandoned during the American Revolution, but the town was re-settled in 1788.   The town was created from parts of the Towns of Windham and Prattsville in 1848.   In 1890, the population was 560.

Early l7th and l8th Century farmers endured very rough pioneer life while adapting to the new environment of the Catskills.   Many began their farms alone, clearing land and building their homes by themselves, sending for their families once established.   Harnessing oxen and horses for power, they used crude wooden plows to carve out fields for crops, however, much of the land was so rocky that many raised sheep.

Many early crops consisted of wheat, corn, oats, and barley.   Those crops were all sowed by hand, cultivated with a hoe, hand-cut with a sickle and threshed using a flail.   Not until the late 18th century were many machines such as the cradle and scythe, cotton gin and cast iron plow invented to make the farmer’s lives easier.
