It is comprised of a number of hamlets, the two largest principal communities still in existence today are Accord and Alligerville. Kerhonkson originated as an outgrowth from a hamlet in an adjacent township.
The eighteenth century settlement was typified by the development of a highly successful commercial agrarian community, exporting agricultural produce by working the rich Rondout Valley. To support this thriving group, small mills of all varieties sprung up on the nearby streams.
