The Town of New Lebanon is in the north of Columbia County, with the Town of Chatham to the west, Rensselaer County to the north, Massachusetts to the east and the Town of Canaan to the south. With close ties to Stephentown in Rensselaer County, Jiminy Peak and Pittsfield. Its historical role as the center of Shaker activity and the resort activity in Lebanon Springs is hardly evident today. The Darrow School and the Abode of the Message use the old Shaker facilities.

According to the U. S. Census for 2000, the town has a total area of 36 square miles and a population of 2,454 people, 96% white. The median income for a household is $44,805 and the per capita income for the town is $20,529.

New Lebanon was formed from the town of Canaan in 1818 and was the main spiritual home of the Shakers. The Mount Lebanon Shaker Society had 609 members in 1864.   Most historic structures now belong to the Shaker Museum and Library.   Some of the other surviving buildings are home to the Darrow School.   Still others have been converted into a Sufi retreat center called the Abode of the Message.

New Lebanon was a popular resort because of its natural springs.  Its agricultural activities are now minimal and most residents work in Albany or Pittsfield, both within commuting distance.   It is also a destination for second home owners, in part attracted by the proximity of the Jiminy Peak Ski Area.

The Shaker Mount Lebanon’s North Family Dairy Barn is the largest stone barn in the Northeast and the Old Chatham Shaker Museum’s new home.

Indians discovered the warm springs and brought the first white man, who was one of New Lebanon’s first settlers,,  Lt. James Hitchcock, to the springs to bathe in the healing waters in 1756.     The warm springs were famous for many years.  He was better known as “Lucky” James Hitchcock.   People came to New Lebanon to “take the waters” and cure their illnesses.   The Indian’s Blessing Fountain, located on Route 22 in Lebanon Springs, was erected by the Lebanon Valley Garden Club in 1940 to bring the curative waters from the Warm Spring for the befit of mankind.

The warm spring is at the top of Spring Hill Road in Lebanon Springs.

The site of the first free public library was established on March 12, 1804 by Jesse Torry, father of the public library movement.   This site is located on West Street in New Lebanon.

The Cemetery of the Evergreens is the site of the massive stone monument of New York State Governor, Samuel J. Tilden who died in 1886.
