As of the 2020 census Columbia County’s population was 61,570 with 50,848 or 82.6% being aged 18 or over. 83.7% of the population identified as Caucasian, 4.2% identified as African American, 0.3% identified as Native American or Alaskan Native, and 2.3% identified as Asian.
The southern part of the county, including the towns of Ancram, Clermont, Germantown, Gallatin, Livingston, and Taghkanic, is attractive to commuters from Westchester, Dutchess and Ulster Counties. The central part of the county, including Hudson, Greenport, Stockport, Copake, Hillsdale, Claverack, Philmont and Ghent, is attractive to residents of Hudson, Albany, the Capital District and the Berkshires seeking a primary residence. The northern part of the county, including Chatham, Kinderhook, Stuyvesant, Valatie and New Lebanon is attractive to those working in Albany and the Berkshires and seeking a primary residence. The eastern part of the county: the towns of Austerlitz, Canaan, and New Lebanon are in striking distance of the Berkshires and Tanglewood as well as Great Barrington, Lenox, Richmond and Pittsfield.
Columbia County NY Economy
The establishments of Fort Orange (now Albany) and New Amsterdam( now NYC) in 1624 allowed traders and travelers to frequently stop along the shores of Columbia County. Small settlements sprang up to supply goods to these ships.
Today, Columbia County takes agriculture seriously. It is an important part of its heritage and a major source of employment.
