Catskill NY History
The area of the town was purchased from the natives for some trinkets in 1678 and settlement followed. The town was established in 1788 while still part of Albany County. The town was increased by an addition from the town of Woodstock in 1800, but was later decreased upon the formation of the towns of Cairo (1803) and Athens (1815).
The village was incorporated in 1806. Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of painting, was a long time residence. The historic Cole House is preserved and has tours available. It is located near the approach for the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
Catskill is the gateway to the Catskill Mountains and the ski areas of Hunter and Windham with a great harbor to the Hudson River. It was the site of the Hudson River painters Thomas Cole and Frederick Church as well as the world reknown athlete Mike Tyson. Catskill has benefitted from the real estate boom in Hudson across the river. Many pioneers prefer Catskill for its lower price homes, which may rival the much pricier Hudson real estate.
