Hillsdale NY History
At the time of the American Revolution, the Taconic hill country was still basically an “unbroken wilderness,” in the words of a standard history of New York State. Most of what is now the Town of Hillsdale belonged to the Van Rensselaer family, major beneficiaries of the Dutch patroon system, and much of the modern town was within the manor of Rensselaerwyck. Colonial maps show
that “Renslaerwick” also included Nobletown and Spencertown. The present location of Route 23 follows the line separating Rensselaer lands from Livingston Manor. Baronial farmlands were leased to proprietors and rented to tenant farmers. Much of upstate New York, including the vast Upper Manor of the Livingstons on the west side of the Hudson, resembled the old European feudal system.
In 1776 Henry Knox passed through Hillsdale while transporting cannons from Albany, New York, to aid the Continentals in the siege of Boston. Two markers are posted in Hillsdale along the Henry Knox Trail.
This territory was taken from the Town of Claverack in 1782. The Columbia Turnpike was chartered by the state legislature in 1799. The road ran from the Massachusetts state line to the Hudson River port of Hudson as a way to bring farm produce, especially wool, rye, and wheat from the farm communities downriver to New York City. Revenues from tolls covered construction and maintenance. The East Gate tollhouse was located in Hillsdale. In 2016, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Catamount ski area is located on the border of Massachusetts and New York and only about a 15-mile ride from the Northwest Connecticut border. The Megaplex trail, which is dedicated to snowboarding, features a 400-foot halfpipe and includes a terrain park featuring a variety of hits, including Rails, Table Tops, and a big Air Jump. It is serviced by its own surface lift. You also will find seven lifts that include four double chairs, one J-bar, and two surface lifts.
The Town is sparsely populated, but the Hamlet has recently implemented a town sewage system. Many residents of the Town of Copake live at Hillsdale postal addresses, and are socially and physically a part of Hillsdale. The Dr. Joseph P. Dorr House and Pine View Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
