LaGrange NY History
The town was named after the ancestral estate of the wife of the Marquis de Lafayette. LaGrange NY is part of an original land grant (Patent) given to Col. Henry Beekman in 1697 by the English Crown. The town was originally established in 1821 as “Freedom” from parts of the Towns of Beekman and Fishkill, but confusion with another location caused the name to be changed to “La Grange” in 1828. Today it is a largely residential community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.9 square miles (103 km2), of which, 39.7 square miles (103 km2) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it is water.
The Taconic State Parkway is a north-south parkway through LaGrange. The parkway also serves as an important commuter road for LaGrange, connecting the town to points south, including New York City. New York State Route 55 is an east-west road that goes through the center of the town; Arlington High School, the Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church, and multiple shops and stores are located on a two-mile section of Route 55 in Freedom Plains, a hamlet of LaGrange. To the west, Route 55 connects LaGrange to Poughkeepsie, NY, the closest urbanized area to LaGrange; to the east, Route 55 connects LaGrange to Pawling, NY, and the New York State Route 22 corridor. New York State Route 82 is a highway that goes southwest-northeast through the town, from Hopewell Junction to Moores Mills. Route 82 connects LaGrange to Millbrook, NY, to the north and Hopewell Junction to the south.

James Baird State Park is a 590-acre (2.4 km2) state park in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The park is located in the northern part of the Town of LaGrange, east of City of Poughkeepsie. The park is named after James Baird, the donor of the land. Baird, who held a Ph.D. in Engineering, formed the construction company that erected the Lincoln Memorial and the Folger Shakespeare Library. He donated his land to the state in 1939 for a park.
The park formerly included a large community swimming pool, which was filled in by park management in the 1980s. Today,[the bathhouse and concession buildings still stand, locked up and unused. The former pool area is bounded by rows of large elm trees.
