The village was named after Sidney Miller, a railroad contractor who helped the people of that area with the introduction of the railroad system. In 1851 there was an industrial revolution taking place in America. The railroad was extended to the Town of Northeast to service the foundries and transport farm goods. Over the next twenty-five years, the Village of Millerton became a commercial center.
Two additional train lines came to Millerton, the Poughkeepsie Train connected the Village to the Hudson River and the Central New England connected it to points East through Connecticut. In the village, hotels were built to accommodate the travelers and salesmen, shops opened to sell all the wares that were available in the cities, churches were built and schools expanded. Millerton had come to life.
Millerton started as an agricultural crossroads with three hotels served by three railroads. The villages decline was precipitated by the shut down of its milk processing plant.
