North East NY History
Northeast Millerton was formed as a town on March 7, 1788. Part of the town was from the Great Nine Partners Patent of 1697 and part of the Little Nine Partners Patent of 1706. The town was first settled by Europeans around 1725, in a region called “The Oblong,” which was not part of the Patent. The town of North East takes its name from its position in the county.
Earliest English settlers migrated from Massachusetts, and Connecticut, while the Dutch moved eastward from the Hudson River valley. Initially, farming was the chief occupation. As the Industrial Revolution took place, major population centers needed food and materials from surrounding areas. Railroads were built to accommodate the need.
Iron ore from neighboring mines was processed here. The furnace was located south of Rudd Pond. Maltby’s Furnace was chosen for the Town of North East logo.
North East NY Real Estate Today
Sidney Miller, civil engineer, brought the railroad to Millerton in 1851. Town fathers named the village , Millerton in his honor. Soon after, the Central New England railroad was built, connecting Boston, to the east with Poughkeepsie and the Hudson River, to the west. At this point everything changed. North East and Millerton became a commercial and agricultural hub. Farmers and merchants thrived. Iron mining and founderies flourished, feeding the Industrial Revolution. Today, the village of Millerton remains the commercial center of the Town of North East.
The Town of North East hosts Rudd Pond State Park and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. The town features a rural landscape with rolling hills and beautiful valleys. It sustains a mix of agricultural and residential uses along with a vibrant village center.
