Austerlitz NY History

The town was named after the Battle of Austerlitz. The town was organized from parts of the towns of Hillsdale, Chatham, and Canaan, March 28, 1818. When the bill erecting it passed the Legislature Martin Van Buren, then a State Senator, and who, being an ardent admirer of the great Napoleon, leaped to his feet and moved to amend by calling the new town “Austerlitz.”
The streams of Austerlitz gave rise to industries such as farming, raising sheep, and mill operations. Saw mills, grist mills, mills for wool carding and the making of cider, shingles and planes enabled the settlers to make a living.

More About Austerlitz

Austerlitz is close to the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood and with its mountainous terrain features many luxury homes and hunting possibilities. Austerlitz is a small, rural town north of Hillsdale, east of Chatham, South of Canaan and West of the Berkshires. Austerlitz NY Real Estate is in great demand especially by those seeking a second home with seclusion or farmland.

Two programs, the Blueberry Festival and Autumn in Austerlitz, grow in popularity each year. Blueberries, prolific on Harvey Mountain, figured prominently in the life of earlier settlers, since sale of blueberries helped them pay their taxes.
