Canaan NY real estate includes Queechy Lake, Shaker Ridge, East Chatham and Red Rock are located in Canaan which borders with Richmond, Massachusetts.   All the residents of Canaan have access to Queechy Lake.  Canaan is 40 minutes from downtown Albany and 15 minutes from Pittsfield Massachusetts.  It is bordered by Austerlitz to the south, New Lebanon to the north, Massachusetts to the east, and Chatham to the west.  Its population of less than 1,800 in an area of 36.7 square miles.  Canaan is a town in Columbia County, New York.  The population was 1,710 at the 2010 census.  The town is in the northeast part of the county.

Canaan was founded by settlers from Canaan, Connecticut in 1759. Since it lies on the Massachusetts border and is close to Pittsfield, Lenox and Stockbridge, it attracts permanent residents who work in Massachusetts and are attracted by the better real estate values in New York State. Also many of its second home residents take advantage of the Berkshires and the proximity of the Tanglewood Music Festival with the Boston Symphony.

One of the oldest sections of Canaan is Frisbee Street, settled in 1770 by Gideon Frisbee, who emigrated from Canaan, Connecticut. Frisbee Street fronts what was once the Albany-Boston stagecoach route.

The general character of the town may be called mountainous.   The Taghkanic range traverses its eastern border, while transverse spurs therefrom extend well across the town towards the west. Its valleys are narrow but fertile.   Geologically the town offers a great variety of formations; some excellent slate exists that is commercially valuable, while magnesian limestone abounds.   Several mineral ores abound, but not in sufficient quantities to make their extraction profitable.   There are no large streams in the town, the outlet of Oueechy Lake, Flat Brook and a branch of the Kline Kill forming the list worthy of mention.   Queechy Lake is a small body of pure water in the northwestern part of the town.

Interstate 90 passes through the town, connecting the Massachusetts Turnpike to the east with the New York State Thruway to the west.   I-90 has one interchange in the town, with New York State Route 22.   The Taconic Mountains rise in the northeast corner of the town.
