Lexington NY Real Estate includes the Town of Lexington which is in the western part of Greene County. It also includes the Hamlets of Bushnellville, Mosquito Point, North Lexington, Spruceton, & West Kill. It is bordered to the west by Delaware County and the Town of Halcott, to the south by Ulster County to the east by the Town of Hunter to the north by the Towns of Ashland, Jewett and Prattsville. According to the U. S. Census for 2010, the town has a total area of 79.7 sq mi square miles and a population of 805. The median income for a household in the town was $29,375. The per capita income for the town was $20,471.
The town was first settled around 1788. Lexington was originally named New Goshen by many settlers (or perhaps the influential ones) that hailed from Goshen, Connecticut. In 1813 Lexington officially became a town from the Town of Windham.
The town name was changed to Lexington by Silas Fowler, a captain in the Revolutionary War as a patriotic reference to Lexington, Massachusetts. A large celebration is planned for 2013 to celebrate the history of Lexington. Silas fought in the Lexington/Concord Battle. In a presumably, heart-felt patriotic gesture, he suggested that this brand new town accept the worthy and patriotic aspects of the name “Lexington”. The idea was accepted, and on April 1st, 1813, our town officially became Lexington, Greene County, New York.

Silas did not stand alone when he faced the first town council. He was accompanied by a “band of Revolutionary War soldiers” who according to records, “influenced” the name change. One of the band was Charles Vorse, also a veteran of the Lexington/Concord Battle. Charles had entered the war at the age of 15 as a drummer boy.
Lexington is within both the Catskill Mountains and the Catskill Park. The south town line is the border of Ulster County, New York. The Schoharie Creek flows through the town.
It is a rural town with many recreational possibilities, including access to several ski areas, with close proximity to Windham. On August 27, 2011, Hurricane Irene (at that point, a tropical storm) inflicted damage to the town. Very heavy rainfall caused the Schoharie Creek to surge higher and cause immense widespread flooding. A small bridge was destroyed, and numerous houses were also washed away by the creek. Farms near the creek were flooded as well. Flash flooding also was an issue. Certain roads that run through the town were flooded and some were damaged. Many homes in Lexington lost power. While the Town has largely recovered, there is a felt need to work toward economic development in the Town and work has begun on a planning process to implement change.
