The town was first settled around 1788. Lexington was originally named New Goshen by many settlers (or perhaps the influential ones) that hailed from Goshen, Connecticut. In 1813 Lexington officially became a town from the Town of Windham.
The town name was changed to Lexington by Silas Fowler, a captain in the Revolutionary War as a patriotic reference to Lexington, Massachusetts. A large celebration is planned for 2013 to celebrate the history of Lexington.
Lexington is within both the Catskill Mountains and the Catskill Park. The south town line is the border of Ulster County, New York. The Schoharie Creek flows through the town.
