AUSTERLITZ NY REAL ESTATE HISTORY

The town was named after the Battle of Austerlitz. Founded in the 1750’s, the town is rich in history – some early settlers and sons served in the Revolutionary War. From the fact that among the first settlers there were no less than twelve families of Spencers, the north part of Austerlitz had been known from the first as “Spencer’s-town.” When the bill enacting it passed the Legislature, however, Martin Van Buren, then a State Senator, and who, being an ardent admirer of the great Napoleon, leaped to his feet and moved to amend by calling the new town “Austerlitz.”

The streams of Austerlitz gave rise to industries such as farming, raising sheep, and mill operations. Saw mills, grist mills, mills for wool carding and the making of cider and shingles enabled the settlers to make a living. Vestiges of old mills, early grave sites and historic buildings still remain.
