New Lebanon is in the north of Columbia County. With close ties to Stephentown in Rensselaer County,  Jiminy Peak and Pittsfield. New Lebanon was formed from the town of Canaan in 1818 and was the main spiritual home of the Shakers. The Mount Lebanon Shaker Society had 609 members in 1864. Still others have been converted into a Sufi retreat center called the Abode of the Message.

The New Lebanon is a popular resort area because of its natural springs. Its agricultural activities are now minimal and most residents work in Albany or Pittsfield, both within commuting distance. It is also a destination for second home owners, in part attracted by the proximity of the Jiminy Peak Ski Area.
