STANFORD was formed from Washington, March 12th, 1793. This town was included in the Great Nine Partners Tract. Its surface is a broken and hilly upland. The area was visited by farmers and trappers in the 18th century with the first settlement around 1750. The town was part of the Great Nine Partners Patent of 1697. The Town of Stanford was formed in 1793 from the Town of Washington.
Stanford remains a rural town very popular with second home owners. Its strategic location adjoining Millbrook has made it a spillover destination and popular with owners of horse farms attracted by the Millbrook Hunt. Its hamlets of Stanfordville and Bangall are the most populated areas.
Bangall is a station on the line of the Duchess and Columbia Railroad. It has several stores and factories, post-office, flour, feed, and saw mills; also three neat and comfortable churches. The origin of its name is thus given; A Yankee pedlar was traveling through here in the prosecution of his business. Bangall Station is a hamlet northeast of Stanfordville. It is the location of Immaculate Conception Church. The Bangall Post Office was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Stanfordville is a hamlet in the south half of the town on Route 82. The Dr. Cornelius Nase Campbell House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The Nase Campbelll House is a historic home located at Stanfordville . It was built about 1845 and is a gable-ended, 2-story timber-frame dwelling with 1 1⁄2-story kitchen wing in a vernacular Italianate style. It has a cross-gable, bay windows, and a cupola. It features a full-length verandah on the front facade and patterned slate shingles. In 1872, it became the “President’s House for the Christian Bible Institute. In 1909 it again became a private residence and a boarding house until abandoned in 1979.
Hunns and Uptons Lakes, are the principal bodies of water. Wappingers Creek is the principal stream. The soil is a good quality of gravelly and slaty loam. Stanfordville, Bangall, Stissingville, and Attlebury are hamlets. An immense spring of pure cold water near the latter place has considerable local notoriety.
