Rochester NY Real Estate includes the Town of Rochester which is surrounded by the Town of Warwarsing to the west, the Towns of Denning and Olive to the North, the Towns of Marbletown and New Paltz to the East and the Town of Gardiner to the south.

In the early 1980s, New York State acquired the land around Minnewaska and created a State Park, adding to the attraction as a tourist center. Today significant portions of the township are protected through a network of private and public stewardship, including the Catskill Forest Preserve, Catskill Park, the private Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park.New homes and businesses were built.

Additionally, second homes were also being built for the first time. Tourists, who had come to like the area, began to buy existing homes and have new ones built in the contemporary fashion. As a result, there was a general surge in new housing stock but little increase in population.

Rochester NY Real Estate

Beginning in the 1680’s, European settlers from the Netherlands, France and England came to the Town of Rochester by way of Kingston, Hurley or New Paltz. Still in existence are early deeds written by settlers and signed by Indians, with the Indians’ signatures being an “X” marked beside their names which are spelled out phonetically in Dutch or English. Even before 1700, there were enough inhabitants for a log meeting-house to have been built for public worship.
In the original Rochester Patent (named in honor of the Earl of Rochester) which was dated 1703, Queen Anne of England granted to Town Trustees the right to convey to settlers ownership of lands in the Town of Rochester, an area which included the present towns of Rochester, Wawarsing and Gardiner, and portions of Sullivan and Delaware counties.

The Town of Rochester was incorporated on January 25, 1703 and organized as a town on March 7, 1788. It is comprised of a number of hamlets, the two largest principal communities still in existence today are Accord and Alligerville. Kerhonkson originated as an outgrowth from a hamlet in an adjacent township.

The eighteenth century settlement was typified by the development of a highly successful commercial agrarian community, exporting agricultural produce by working the rich Rondout Valley. To support this thriving group, small mills of all varieties sprung up on the nearby streams.

In 1828 the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) Canal began service from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to Kingston (actually Eddyville, NY), where it connected to the Hudson River. The principal purpose for creating the waterway was to transport coal bound for the New York City market. However, numerous secondary freight markets also developed along the canal and they spawned an era of tremendous industrial growth throughout Ulster County and elsewhere along the route.

The 1845 census reported that 68% percent of the people were farmers. And while records indicate that industrial pursuits such as sawmills and gristmills declined in number from 1835 to 1865, they also show that the number of acres improved for farmland increased by 44% to 20,645 acres. Dairy farming continued as a strong endeavor

In 1902 the Ontario and Western (O&W) Railroad extended service from the Ellenville terminus to Kingston through Rochester. Tourism became the primary industry in the early twentieth century. Numerous boarding houses, bungalow colonies, and camps sprang up throughout the township. By 1925, the pair of Lake Minnewaska Mountain Houses could accommodate about 550 guests and Mohonk could handle another 450.

According to the U. S. Census for 2010, the town has a total area of 88.8 square miles and a population of 7,313. The median income for a household is $43,071 and the per capita income for the town is $21,065.

For the better part of the 20th century, the summer resort industry played an important role in the economic life of the Town. Accommodations for paying guests were provided first in private homes, and later in a total of over 50 bungalow colonies, camps, boarding houses and hotels.
