Hudson, originally known as “Claverack Landing,” was settled by TheDutch first, then Seafarers from Massachusetts and Rhode Island and merchants. Carefully designed in the 1780s as a shipping center, with “gangway” alleys, ropewalks, wharves and a warehouse. It was the first city to receive a charter after the Declaration of independence in 1785. Whaling and industry became the mainstays of Hudsons economy as the city grew rapidly and by 1790 was the 24th largest city in the United States. As late as 1820, it was the fourth largest city in New York State.
Construction of the Erie Canal in 1824 drew development west in the state, stimulating development of cities related to Great Lakes trade, such as Rochester and Buffalo, although the Hudson River continued to be important to commerce.
During the 19th century, considerable industry was developed in Hudson, and the city became known as a factory town. It attracted new waves of immigrants and migrants to industrial jobs. Wealthy factory owners and merchants built fine houses in the Victorian period. Hudson obtained a new charter in 1895. It reached its peak of population in 1930, with 12,337 residents.
In the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, Hudson became notorious as a center of vice, especially gambling and prostitution, boasting more than 50 bars. In 1951 raids during Governor Dewey’s tenure ended much of the vice. Hudson experienced a steep decline in the 60s and 70s. A group of antiques dealers opened shops, eventually numbering 70, on the city’s main thoroughfare, Warren Street, in the mid-1980s.
Hudson’s recent rise began in the 1980s with an influx of antique dealers. The outstanding housing stock, including many brick buildings of architectural significance helped spur the revival. With skyrocketing housing value on Warren Street and adjoining residential areas many entrepreneurs have realized substantial profits. The City has also attracted a variety of upscale restaurants, boutique hotels, small businesses relocating from metropolitan New York.
Following this business revival, the city experienced a residential revival as well, and is now known for its active arts scene, antiques shops, restaurants, art galleries and nightlife.
